Air Conduction

Air Conduction is an audio technology where sound is transmitted through the air to the ear without using vibrations through the skull. In open-ear headphones, the speakers are placed close to the ear, so the sound reaches the ear canal while the ear remains open.

What does Air Conduction mean?

In open-ear headphones, Air Conduction allows you to listen to music, podcasts, and calls without blocking the ear canal. Sound is transmitted through the air directly to the ear, while you can still hear traffic, conversations, or other sounds from your surroundings. This makes the technology particularly suitable for running, cycling, walking, and everyday use where situational awareness is important.

What is important to know?

Air Conduction is often confused with Bone Conduction, but the two technologies work differently. Bone Conduction transmits sound through vibrations in the cheekbone or skull, while Air Conduction uses small speakers to transmit sound waves through the air. Therefore, open-ear headphones with Air Conduction can often deliver a more natural sound with richer bass and higher detail, while maintaining the advantages of an open design. However, the final sound experience also depends on the headphones' drivers, tuning, and placement around the ear.
